Ion-exchange resins are polymers that act as ion-exchange media. They are commonly insoluble matrix in the form of small microbeads, usually white or pale yellow. Ion-exchange resins contain acidic or basic functional groups and can exchange counter-ions in the aqueous solution around them. As a cost-effective separation method, ion-exchange and adsorption technology has been widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. Large-scale separation and purification can be achieved using complex and designable ion exchange resins through removal of impurities and concentration of targets, producing highly purified compounds. In addition, the resins can be used for drug delivery such as controlled release and taste masking. Drugs can be released from the resinate by ion exchange in the gastrointestinal fluid, followed by drug diffusion. Since resins are high molecular weight water-insoluble polymers, they are not absorbed by the human body and are therefore inert. The drug release characteristics depend on specific properties of the resin such as available capacity, acid-base strength, particle size, porosity, and swelling.
