Purification of target nucleic acids is an important step before many biotechnological processes such as detection, cloning, sequencing, amplification, hybridization, cDNA synthesis, etc., none of which can be performed with crude sample materials. The presence of a large number of cellular or other contaminating materials in complex sample mixtures often impedes many subsequent reactions and techniques. Thus, many applications that rely on DNA or RNA identification require effective, reliable, and reproducible methods to isolate nucleic acids from complex mixtures. In contrast to other techniques, magnetic separation of nucleic acids can directly isolate nucleic acids from crude materials such as blood, tissue homogenates, culture media, and water. Since the magnetic properties of solid materials can be adjusted, they can be selectively removed relatively easily from viscous sample suspensions. In addition, the efficiency of magnetic separation is particularly suitable for large-scale purification.
Magnetic carriers with immobilized affinity ligands or prepared from biopolymers that exhibit affinity to the target nucleic acid are used in the separation process. Many magnetic carriers are magnetic particles made from different synthetic polymers, biopolymers, porous glass, or magnetic particles based on inorganic magnetic materials. Paramagnetic particles, especially suitable materials, do not interact with each other in the absence of a magnetic field. These particles are magnetized in strong magnetic fields, but do not retain permanent magnetism once the field is gone. In the process of reaction, magnetic aggregation and agglomeration of particles are prevented, which ensures easy suspension of particles and uniform nucleic acid extraction.

BcMag™ magnetic beads are uniform, monodisperse, spherical, core-shell superparamagnetic beads consisting of a nanoscale superparamagnetic iron oxide core completely encased in a high purity silica shell.
