Magnetic polymer beads are composed of magnetic nanoparticles or microparticles embedded in a polymer matrix. The beads can vary in size from a few hundred nanometers to a few millimeters. Magnetic polymer beads benefit from the combination of the intrinsic properties of the two components, magnetic particles, and polymers. The magnetic particles make the beads magnetic, which allows the rapid and easy separation of beads by the application of an external magnetic field. Moreover, due to these properties, magnetic particles can be utilized as thermal generators when they convert magnetic energy to heat due to relaxation processes and hysteresis losses. The polymer components can stabilize magnetic particles and provide swelling capacity and elasticity to magnetic beads. In addition, the polymer endows the particles with the desired functional groups. The functionalization of the surface of magnetic beads by specific ligands enables applications in immunoassay, the isolation of nucleic acid, cell separation, etc. Magnetic beads have unique advantages in the analysis and purification of biological materials. They are ideal for rapid purification of small-scale biological samples. Magnetic bead-based purification techniques avoid the denaturation of biomaterials that may be caused by traditional methods and are therefore widely used in different areas of biomolecular research.
Amerigo Scientific offers MagneStar® magnetic beads that are superparamagnetic microspheres with highly uniform size, rapid magnetic response, low non-specific adsorption, and high ability to bind biological ligands. MagneStar® MP magnetic beads have a sandwich structure. The magnetite layer is sandwich-ed between a polymer core and encapsulating outer layers. The surface of MagneStar® MP magnetic beads is coated with a hydrophilic polymer, which reduces non-specific adsorption and provides surface functional groups for covalent attachment of biological ligands. The magnetic beads have highly uniform sizes with CV < 5% and good batch-to-batch consistency, making them suitable for assay development in vitro diagnostics. MagneStar® MP magnetic beads can be also used in other applications such as magnetic separation of cells, magnetic carriers of enzyme catalysts, and suspension arrays.
