Biological buffers and reagents are key tools for life sciences laboratory to obtain accurate and reliable results. Buffers are aqueous systems that resists pH changes when small amounts of acid or base are added. The buffer solution consists of a proton donor (weak acid or base) and its proton acceptor (conjugate base or acid). In a solution with equal concentrations of the proton donor and conjugate proton acceptor, the equilibria of reversible reactions results in buffering.

The role of buffers in biological systems is to maintain the intracellular and extracellular pH within a narrow range and to resist changes in pH in the presence of internal and external influences. Most buffers used for cell culture, cell separation, enzyme analysis and other applications must have the following characteristics, such as the pKa between 6.0 and 8.0, high water solubility and minimal solubility in organic solvents, no interference with biological processes, non-toxicity, chemical stability, ease-to-use, etc.
