Nucleic acid staining dyes are used to visualize nucleic acids in electrophoresis gels. Ethidium bromide (EtBr) is the most common dye used for gel staining. Due to the mutagenicity, toxicity and low sensitivity of EtBr, other more sensitive stains with lower detection limit and less toxicity are becoming popular.
