Based on the state of stationary phase, gas chromatography (GC) is classified into gas-solid chromatography (GSC), using a solid adsorbent as the stationary phase, and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) employing a nonvolatile liquid as the stationary phase coated onto a support or the wall of column. The separation mechanism of GSC is mainly on differences between the adsorption affinities of the sample components for the surface of an active solid. GLC is designed by partition principle, and the use of it is far more prevalent than GSC.
