Sulfathiazole Sodium is a bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfathiazole acts as a competitor with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in the folic acid synthesis pathway. It is used in veterinary research in animal models to inhibit folate formation by gut bacteria. Sulfathiazole Sodium is sparingly soluble in aqueous solution.

Background
Sulfonamide will be catalyzed to competitive combine with the pteridine instead of the para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) during folic acid synthesis, inhibiting production of folic acid. Resistance is due to the alteration of dihydropteroate synthase or alternative pathway for folic acid synthesis.
