CD31 has cytoplasmic, membranous expression in non-neoplastic and neoplastic vascular endothelialcells.1 It has been used as a tool to identify the vascular origin of neoplasms such as angiosarcomas, Kaposi sarcomas and epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Immunohistochemical study with CD31 hasalso been shown useful to detect areas of tumor lymphovascular invasion. Additionally, detection ofweak diffuse cytoplasmic CD31 immunoreactivity has been seen in cases of various carcinomas withoccasional membranous staining in ductal carcinomas of the breast as well as in intratumoralmacrophages.
