Paromomycin sulfate is an antibiotic used to inhibit the growth of bacteria in laboratory cultures. It is a member of the neomycin family of antibiotics, which are usually used against gram-positive bacteria. Paromomycin sulfate is most effective against sycoplasma, streptococci, and staphylococci. It has low sensitivity to gram-negative bacteria such as enterobacteria and pseudomonas. Paromomycin sulfate acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in the cell. This drug is not absorbed well by the human body, however it does not cause serious side effects. The use of paromomycin sulfate for culture media only may lead to damage in control groups due to its high toxicity for animal cells (e.g. inhibition of mitosis and DNA synthesis).
