It forms a covalent bond with a serine residue in the enzyme’s active site. Inhibition is time-dependent and irreversible. Clavulanic acid β-lactam antibiotics bind and inhibit PBPs (penicillin binding protein) thus inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
