Bleomycin sulfate is a glycopeptide antibiotic and a DNA-damaging agent that inhibits DNA synthesis. It has a broad spectrum of activity, exhibiting strong antimicrobial effects against bacteria, fungi (including yeasts), plants, and mammalian cells. Therefore, it is commonly used as a highly effective selectable antibiotic and can also be used as a selection agent for transforming cells, especially in plant cell transformations.
