E-cadherin is an adhesion protein that is expressed in cells of epithelial lineage. Anti-E-cadherin stainspositively in glandular epithelium as well as adenocarcinomas of the lung, gastrointestinal tract andovary. Another application involves the differentiation of ductal (which is membrane staining) vs. lobularcancer of the breast (which is cytoplasmic staining). It has also been shown to be positive in somethyroid carcinomas. A combination of E-cadherin and p120 catenin helps distinguish ductal carcinomaof the breast from lobular carcinoma.
