Human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) is the likely etiological agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). HHV-8 DNAsequences have been found in Kaposi's sarcoma lesions, primary effusion lymphoma, and multicentric Castleman's disease via polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization. Latent nuclear antigen(LNA-1, LNA, LANA-1), also known as ORF73, is a 222-or 234 kD protein that is consistently expressedin HHV-8 infected cells. Anti-HHV-8 labels the latent nuclear antigen protein via immunohistochemistry.
