Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a versatile semiconductor material. It has a wide bandgap of 3.37 eV which gives it unique optical and electrical properties. Specifically, ZnO is transparent to visible light but can absorb ultraviolet rays. This makes it useful for UV filtering applications. Additionally, ZnO has a high exciton binding energy that enables efficient excitonic emission at room temperature. This is beneficial for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes. ZnO is also piezoelectric, meaning it can convert mechanical stress into electrical energy. This property is valuable in sensors and actuators.
