X-Gal (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-galactopyranoside) is a widely-used chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase that produces dark blue color after enzymatic reaction. A technique called blue-white screening employs X-GAL as an indicator of ß-glactosidase enzyme (encoded by the lacZ gene) expression.
