Vancomycin is a tricyclic glycopeptide antibiotic that has bactericidal effects against staphylococci, streptococci, and other gram-positive bacteria. It is often used as an alternative treatment for severe staphylococcal and streptococcal infections, including endocarditis, and infections with MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), penicillin-resistant pneumococci or in cases of allergy to penicillins and cephalosporins.
