Streptavidin is a biotin-binding protein derived from Streptococcus averdinii and composed of four identical subunits. Each subunit has a binding site with high affinity for biotin. In biology, streptavidin is often coated on magnetic beads. With the help of the high affinity binding properties of streptavidin-biotin, it binds biotinylated proteins, peptides, and non-protein molecules (such as various DNA and RNA molecules), and then quickly separates biotinylated components from the mixed system for various applications such as affinity purification, cell separation, DNA probe analysis, and mRNA separation.
