Synovial fluid, also referred to as synovia, reduces friction within synovial joints when they move. An ultrafiltrate from plasma, synovial fluid contains plasma proteins as well as proteins produced by joint tissue cells. Components of synovial fluid include hyaluronan and lubricin / PRG4. The main functions of synovial fluid include reducing friction, shock absorption, transporting nutrients and waste, and molecular sieving. Please note, the viscosity of synovial fluid can be decreased in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Please contact us at for specific academic pricing.
