Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 2 (IGFBP2) is a member of IGF binding protein superfamily. IGFBP2 is expressed in a number of tissues during development. The highest expression level is found in the central nervous system. In adults, high expression levels are also detected in the central nervous system as well as reproductive tissues. IGFBP2 prolongs the half-life of the IGFs and have been shown to either inhibit or stimulate the growth-promoting effects of the IGFs on cell culture. In addition, IGFBP2 is overexpressed in many malignancies and is often correlated with an increasingly malignant status of the tumor, indicating potential involvement of IGFBP2 in tumorigenesis.
