Rapamycin, also known as sirolimus is a macrolide antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces hygroscopicus with anti-fungal, anti-inflammantory, anti-tumor, and immunosuppressive properties. It inhibits the protein, mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), which is a key regulatory kinase in controlling the cytokine-mediated cellular proliferation. Additionally, Rapamycin induces apoptosis and inhibits angiogenesis and proliferation in tumor cell lines.
