Guanidine thiocyanate is a denaturing agent and is used routinely in in combination with phenol−chloroform for RNA isolation. Due to its strong ability to inhibit the activity of DNase and RNase and subsequently prevent DNA and RNA denaturation, Guanidine thiocyanate is the preferred agent for use during cell lysis, and for DNA or RNA extraction. Its ability in inactivation of nucleases make it ideal agent for storing and freezing fecal samples for DNA studies. Guanidine thiocyanate can also deactivate effectively enveloped viruses and less effectively non-enveloped viruses.
