          Background

FITC, also known as fluorescein 5-isothiocyanate, is a fluorescein derivative used in a variety of applications including flow cytometry. FITC reacts with amine groups to form conjugates with proteins for detection by various fluorescent-based applications. The excitation and emission maxima of FITC are 494 and 519 nm, respectively. Therefore, FITC serves as a useful reagent for attaching the fluorescein chromophore to amino groups of proteins, for the purpose of the micro-detection of protein in cells under ultraviolet light. In addition, FITC has also been proven to be a safe and effective technique for lymphatic mapping in the Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventing Healing Approach (LYMPHA) procedure.
