D-Galactose (D-Galactopyranose, D-(+)-Galactose) is an aldohexose and a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that serves as an energy source. It is also an essential component of glycolipids and glycoproteins. Leloir pathway is an enzymatic cascade which results in conversion of Galactose to Glucose (he most abundant monosaccharide).Defects in the genes encoding any of the Leloir pathway’s enzymes lead to the galactosemia. Lactose is a disaccharide composed of galactose and glucose. Galactose is released upon hydrolysis ofLactose by β-galactosidase enzymes.
