Human transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1), also designated CD71, is a homodimeric type II membraneglycoprotein of 90-95 kDa. This receptor binds two molecules of the serum iron-transport proteintransferrin (Tf) and is internalised into endosomes that are acidified, resulting in the release of ironfrom Tf. TfR1 is not expressed on resting leukocytes but is upregulated on all proliferating cells uponactivation, reflecting the iron dependence of proliferation. In tissues TfR1 is expressed on most dividingcells and on brain capillary endothelium. Expression of TfR1 is down regulated as a result of ironoverload. TfR1 shares 45% identity with TfR2.
