Mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins which constitute the major component of the mucuslayer that protects the gastric epithelium from chemical and mechanical aggressions. In humans, atleast 14 mucin genes have been identified that code for the mucin proteins. MUC6 is a secretorymucin that is part of a family of at least 14 high molecular weight glycoproteins made by manyepithelial tissues. MUC6 is preferentially expressed in non-neoplastic gastric tissue, specifically in thepyloric glands. During neoplastic transformation, mucin expression may be altered within these tissuesleading to particular patterns of expression.
