Anti-CD45 (anti-leukocyte common antigen) is routinely used to aid the differential diagnosis ofundifferentiated neoplasms, whenever malignant lymphoma is suspected by the morphological orclinical data. It is a highly specific antibody; therefore a positive result is highly indicative ofhematolymphoid origin. Certain types of hematolymphoid neoplasms may lack CD45 (Hodgkinlymphoma, some T-cell lymphomas, and some leukemias) so its absence does not rule out ahematolymphoid tumor. This antibody is expressed almost exclusively by cells of hematopoietic lineageand is present in most benign and malignant lymphocytes as well as plasma cell precursors.
