- CD56, also known as neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), is a calcium-independent homophilicbinding protein that belongs to a group of cell adhesion molecules including cadherins, selectins, andintegrins. CD56 is involved in cellìcell adhesion of neural cells during embryogenesis and is expressedon most neuroectodermally derived tissues.
