o-Phenanthroline is a metal chelating agent and a heterocyclic organic compound which acts as a Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP)inhibitor. It is widely used in biochemistry and analytical chemistry due its ability to forms complexes with metal ions. o-Phenanthroline complexes with Fe2+ (not with Fe3+) and serves as aredox indicator in biological studies. It is also used in studying DNA-protein interactions due to its nuclease activity as result of it complex with copper.
