Sulfapyridine, USP is a first generation sulfonamide discovered in 1937 by L Whitby at May & Baker, so the compound was named M&B693. Sulfapyridine has also been found to have anti-inflammatory effects and can be used in immunodeficiency studies. It can also be used in oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) where it scavenges peroxyl radicals. It is practically insoluble in water (0.29 mg/ml) and water solubility is significantly pH dependent. Formulations with sodium salt have a similar potency and improved water solubility.
