Samarium fluoride is a rare-earth fluoride with a hexagonal crystal structure. It has been investigated for its potential use in optical materials, particularly as a host matrix for rare-earth-doped lasers and phosphors. SmF3 thin films deposited by sputtering have been explored for their use in optical coatings and as a component in solid-state lasers.
