Fecal S100A12 is a novel non-invasive marker which allows the distinction between IBD and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) as well as viral infections with high sensitivity and specificity. The calcium binding protein is expressed in the cytosol of granulocytes and released into the inflammatory tissue. The protein interacts with the RAGE-receptor on endothelial cells, mononuclear phagocytes and lymphocytes and triggers pro-inflammatory processes.
IBD Patients, suffering from Crohn‘s disease or ulcerative colitis exhibit significantly elevated S100A12 levels compared to healthy individuals or patients with IBS. (Foell et al. 2008; Sidler et al. 2008; Kaiser et al. 2007; de Jong et al. 2006).
