Mucin-1 (MUC1) is a membrane-bound protein that belongs to the mucin family. MUC1 is a glycoprotein with extensive O-linked glycosylation of its extracellular domain. It is expressed on the apical surface of epithelial cells that line the mucosal surfaces of various tissues including lung, breast stomach and pancreas. MUC1 plays an important role in forming protective mucous barriers on epithelial surfaces. It is also involved in intracellular signaling. MUC-1 promotes tumor progression and regulates TP53-mediated transcription and determines cell fate in the genotoxic stress response. Overexpression of MUC1 is often associated with colon, breast, ovarian, lung and pancreatic cancers.
