      • Overview
        • Glypican-3 (GPC3) is a heparan sulfate proteoglycan that belongs to the glypican family. GPC3 is highly expressed in lung, liver, and kidney. GPC3 is overexpressed in various neoplasms including hepatocellular carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and testicular yolk sac tumor, and plays an essential role in cell growth and differentiation. GPC3 has tissue-dependent function. In certain tissues, GPC3 acts as a tumor suppressor gene, whereas in others, it acts as an oncofetal protein. GPC3 expression has also been found in some squamous cell carcinomas of the lung and clear cell carcinomas of the ovary. The role of GPC3 in melanomas is still debated. Thus, GPC3 is currently considered as a tumor marker and potential target for immunotherapy.
