Annexin A1 is a member of the annexin family that can bind to cellular membranes in a calcium-dependent manner, promoting membrane fusion and endocytosis. Annexin A1 is found in the cytoplasm, on the cell surface, and in the extracellular fluid. Annexin A1 has anti-inflammatory activities and inhibits phospholipase A2 function. Annexin A1 is also involved in membrane aggregation, inflammation, phagocytosis, proliferation, apoptosis, and tumorigenesis and cancer development. It can exert both positive and negative effects on epithelial mesenchymal transition and tumor metastasis.
