6-phospho-beta-glucosidase (BglA) is a member of the glycosyl hydrolase 1 family. BglA is constitutively expressed in E.coli. It can form a homotetramer and catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphorylated beta-glucosides into glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P) and aglycone. BglA has a high affinity for phosphorylated aromatic beta-glucosides (p-nitrophenyl-beta-glucoside, phenyl beta-glucoside, arbutin.) Whereas it has a low affinity for phosphorylated salicin and phosphorylated beta-methyl-glucoside.
