      • Overview
        • CD163 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to group B of the cysteine-rich scavenger receptor family. The expression of CD163 is essential and is induced by glucocorticoids, IL-10, IL-6, or endotoxin on circulating monocytes, tissue macrophages. CD163 plays an important role in the clearance of hemoglobin-haptoglobin (Hb-Hp) complexes in the liver, spleen and circulation. A soluble form of CD163 exists in plasma, commonly known as sCD163. sCD163 is generated by ectodomain shedding of the membrane-bound receptor. sCD163 is upregulated in a wide range of inflammatory diseases including liver cirrhosis, type 2 diabetes, macrophage activation syndrome, Gauchers disease, sepsis, HIV infection, rheumatoid arthritis and Hodgkin Lymphoma.
