Rabbits are picky eaters. Because of their special tooth structure, they have high requirements for the content and quality of forage in their diet. Therefore, it is difficult for rabbits to adapt to the general purified feed. In the process of modeling, only a certain amount of fat or other raw materials can be added to the general maintenance feed. Many studies have shown that cholesterol is the main factor affecting atherosclerosis in rabbits. In addition, the higher the saturated fatty acid content of fat in the diet, the more likely it is to cause atherosclerosis in rabbits. Therefore, hydrogenated coconut oil containing more than 99% saturated fatty acids is commonly used to induce atherosclerosis in rabbits. Commonly used formulas include the addition of 4.7% or 9.7% hydrogenated coconut oil and 0.3% cholesterol to the rabbit maintenance feed. In addition, some formulas also add 10% lard, 10% egg yolk powder, 5% sucrose and 0.5% cholesterol. The effect is also very good. Diet induced atherosclerosis is a chronic disease, so it also needs a long-term process in animals, such as a few months to a year. In some experiments, in order to make plaque develop faster and save modeling time, high-fat cholesterol diet will be used together with surgical double aortic balloon stripping injury.
