Polymyxin B sulfate is used to inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria in cell cultures. It has been shown to inhibit the expression of TNF-α, which may be associated with the hypersensitivity reaction that can occur in patients taking neomycin sulfate, a related antibiotic. The mechanism of action of polymyxin B sulfate is not fully understood but it has been suggested that it inhibits electron transfer and alters membrane proteins and lysosomal enzymes in susceptible bacteria. This product is not licensed for therapeutic use in humans and should be used according to manufacturer instructions.
