Phosphate-buffered saline (abbreviated PBS) is a buffer solution commonly used in biological research. It is a water-based salt solution containing disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride and, in some formulations, potassium chloride and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The buffer helps to maintain a constant pH.
Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is a non-toxic solution used in many biological laboratories. Unlike water, PBS prevents cells rupturing or shrivelling up due to osmosis. The two key advantages of phosphate buffers are that phosphate is highly soluble in water and that it has an extremely high buffering capacity. Phosphates inhibit enzymatic reactions. This balanced salt solution may be used in many cell culture applications, such as washing cells prior to dissociation, diluting cells for counting and transporting cells or tissues.
