Octanoyl coenzyme A (Octanoyl-CoA) is a medium-chain acyl-CoA derivative involved in crucial metabolic processes, particularly in lipid metabolism and energy production. It acts as a preferred substrate for ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT), which catalyzes the octanoylation of the hunger-regulating peptide hormone ghrelin, a modification necessary for ghrelin's biological activity. Octanoyl-CoA participates in mitochondrial β-oxidation, serving as a substrate for acyl-CoA dehydrogenases and other enzymes in the fatty acid degradation pathway. Its role is central in metabolic regulation, bridging nutrient sensing and energy homeostasis in various tissues (Yang et al., 2008; Hiltunen et al., 2005).
