Hormone which can suppress food intake.
Similarly to ghrelin, obestatin is derived from the proteolytic cleavage of proghrelin and binds to the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR39 to suppress food intake, inhibit jejunal contraction and decrease body-weight gain in rats, contrary to the appetite-stimulating effects of ghrelin. Thus two peptide hormones with opposing action in weight regulation are derived from the same ghrelin gene.
