N-Benzyl-N-bis(PEG3-acid) is a PEG derivative that contains a benzyl group and two PEG3-acid groups. The benzyl group acts as a protecting group for the amine and can be deprotected via hydrogenolysis. The terminal carboxylic acid can be reacted with primary amine groups in the presence of activators (e.g. EDC, or DCC) to form a stable amide bond. The hydrophilic PEG linker increases the water solubility of the compound in aqueous media.
