mRNA molecules are encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), which protect the active components of mRNA vaccines from degradation and enable efficient mRNA delivery within cells. LNPs mainly contain four components, including ionizable lipids, neutral auxiliary lipids, cholesterol, and PEGylated lipids. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) can improve the stability and lifetime of LNPs.
