L-Glutamic acid is an acidic, charged (at physiological pH), aliphatic amino acid that is canonical being synthesized in human by alanine or aspartic acid via alpha-ketoglutarate and the action of various transaminases. Its 13C5 compound can be used as a quantitative standard or metabolic tracer in MS-based experiments.
