Background
L-Alanyl-L-glutamine is a stable, water-soluble dipeptide comprised of L-glutamine and L-alanine. L-Alanyl-L-glutamine is used as a nutritional supplement with potential protective and absorption enhancing activities. After oral or enteral administration, L-alanyl-L-glutamine works locally in the gastrointestinal tract, protecting the integrity of the intestinal mucosa and maintaining intestinal barrier functions. This reduces bacterial translocation, infection risk, as well as infection-associated symptoms including diarrhea, malabsorption, dehydration, as well as electrolyte imbalances. L-Alanyl-L-glutamine also increases absorption of other chemicals such as L-glutamine. In addition, L-alanyl-L-glutamine has been shown to benefit the antioxidant system, attenuate inflammation, and modulate the heat shock protein response in catabolic situations.
