Cobalamin/vitamin B12 is essential for the formation of blood cells and DNA synthesis, and needs to be taken up with the diet. Intrinsic factor, which is secreted by the stomach, binds to vitamin B12 in the small intestine to allow its endocytosis in the ileum.
