Background
Imipenem is an intravenous β-lactam antibiotic. It was the first member of carbapenem antibiotics. Carbapenems are highly resistant to β-lactamases enzymes produced by many multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria and therefore play a key role in treating infections that are not easily treated with other antibiotics.
