          Background

Interleukin 2 (IL2) is a secreted cytokine that is important for the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes and is produced by activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, gamma δ T cells, B cells, dendritic cells and eosinophils. IL-2 plays a critical role in immune responses against pathogenic infection. Recognition and binding of the foreign Ags by the TCRs stimulate both the secretion of IL-2 and the expression of IL-2Rs on the T cell surface, which then stimulates the growth, differentiation, and survival of the Ag-selected cytotoxic T cells. IL-2 also acts on activated B cells, monocytes, NK, LAK cells, and on oligodendroglial cells in vitro.
The human IL-2 cDNA encodes a 153 aa protein. Human and mouse IL-2 exhibit cross-species activity. Human IL-2 acts on murine and human T cells. Recombinant human IL-2 is a 15.5 kDa protein containing 134 amino acid residues.
