          Background

          Nanodiamonds (NDs) are the most promising nanomaterials for use in biomedicine due to their characteristics of biocompatibility, mechanical and chemical stability, photoluminescence stability, multi-functional surface, easy modification, and low toxicity. Doping impurity atoms in the diamond lattice can endow them with interesting new properties. Doping diamond lattices with boron can provide significant electrical conductivity and even superconductivity.
          Boron doped nanodiamonds (BNDs) would be an attractive material for many applications, including high-surface area electrodes for electrochemistry, electrode materials in supercapacitors, electrocatalytic materials in fuel cells, and nanoscale diamond electronic devices and sensors. In addition, some studies have shown that BND are extremely promising for carrying out hyperthermia and thermoablation of tumors. Because BND can selectively heat the local environment, for example, in tumor cells, by using NIR lasers excitation in a tissue transparent window without heating the surrounding tissue. This makes BND superior to other NDs, such as high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) pulverization and detonation NDs.
