The broad-spectrum antibacterial pexiganan with an additional N-terminal cysteine.
Cys-Pexiganan is the broad-spectrum antibacterial pexiganan with an additional N-terminal cysteine attached. Pexiganan is a 22-amino acid analog of the naturally occurring antimicrobial magainin2 , extracted from the skin of the African frog Xenopus laevis. Pexiganan exhibits in vitro broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many clinical isolates of gram-positive and gram-negative, anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and is the best-studied AMP to date for therapeutic purposes. The addition of the N-terminal cysteine in Cys-pexiganan allows immobilization of pexiganan as a novel approach towards endowing material surfaces with bactericidal properties as well as attachment of fluorescent or biotin tags.
